Aizawl: Former health minister and incumbent Mizoram Congress vice president Lal Thanzara has been elected to head the grand old party as president in the state, Congress sources said. 

In the election held on Tuesday, Lal Thanzara, the brother of former chief minister and ex-Congress president Lal Thanhawla, defeated his opponent Zodintluanga Ralte, who is also a former minister, by a margin of 112 votes, the sources said.

The election results were announced late Tuesday night. 

Lal Thanzara will replace Lalsawta.

Incumbent vice president Lalnunmawia Chuaungo amassed 1,093 votes against his opponent lone Congress legislator C. Ngunlianchunga, who bagged 763 votes, to retain his post.

Lalmalsawma Nghaka also retained his post as treasurer by defeating his opponent ex-legislator Lalrindika Ralte by a margin of 354 votes.
