Mizoram has decided to reopen colleges, universities and other higher educational institutions from first March, an official statement said.

The meeting of the higher and technical education department and health department officials chaired by higher and technical education minister Dr. R. Lalthangliana on Friday reviewed the proposal for reopening of colleges.

The meeting unanimously decided to reopen colleges, universities and higher educational institutions like the National Institute of Technology (NIT), College of Veterinary Sciences and others from March 1, the statement said.

The meeting instructed all college authorities to undertake mandatory thermal screening at the entrance and to strictly follow the standard of operating procedure (SOP), it said.

Lalthangliana, who is also the health minister, urged authorities of schools, colleges, universities and other institutions to adhere to Covid-19 protocols, guidelines made from time to time and respect dos and don’ts with respect to the pandemic.

Health and family welfare board vice-chairman and MLA Dr. ZR Thiamsanga and higher and technical education board vice-chairman and MLA Vanlaltanpuia also attended the meeting.

Earlier on Wednesday, the government decided to allow the reopening of schools for students of classes 5-8 from March 1.

Schools were already reopened for students of classes 10, 12 on January 22 and for classes- 9 and 11 on February 22.

The reopening of schools for students of lower classes is yet to be decided depending on the Covid-19 situation, according to state school education department director James Lalrinchhana.

All educational institutions in Mizoram have been closed since March last year due to the spread of Covid-19.

Mizoram’s Covid-19 curve has shown a downward trend since November last year.

The state on Friday reported six cases, pushing the tally to 4,419.

The number of active cases stands at 23 while 4,386 people have already recovered from the virus.

Four people were discharged from Zoram Medical College (ZMC) on Friday.
