In their efforts against smuggling activities, Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) seized another consignment of smuggled foreign-origin cigarettes in Mizoram on Friday.

The HQ IGAR (east) informed that the Assam Rifles troops seized 39 cases and 48 of foreign-origin cigarettes in general area of Sangau in Mizoram on Friday.

“The operation was carried out by a joint team of Assam Rifles and Customs Preventive Force, Lunglei based on specific information,” the HQ IGAR (East) said in a statement.

The approximate market value of the seized foreign-origin cigarettes will be Rs 51,94,800, it said.

“Ongoing smuggling of drugs is a major cause of concern for the state of Mizoram, especially along the India-Myanmar border,” the HQ IGAR (East) stated.

Assam Rifles, rightly christened as the ‘Sentinels of Northeast’, has continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram, it said.

Earlier, on April 29, a joint operation of the Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles and the Customs Preventive Force, Champhai seized 53 cases and 45 packets of foreign-origin cigarettes from the Chhungte area in Mizoram.
