Assam Rifles and the excise & narcotics department seized 57.4 grams of heroin and nabbed a drug peddler along the Zokhawthar-Melbuk road in Champhai district near the Indo-Myanmar border on Wednesday, an official of Assam Rifles said.

The contraband worth Rs. 22.96 lakh was smuggled from Myanmar, he said.

Both the accused and the consignment of heroin were handed over to the excise and narcotics department, he added.

“Serchhip Battalion of Assam Rifles on 5 May recovered 57.4 grams of Heroin No-4 worth Rs 22.96 lakhs near Zokhawthar Village, Aizwal District in Mizoram,” the Assam Rifles tweeted on Wednesday.

Assam Rifles troops deployed in Mizoram continue to carry out anti-smuggling operations and apprehend drug peddlers from time to time.

On April 29, 2021, the Assam Rifles troops recovered contraband items worth Rs 70.07 lakhs in Chhungre village of Mizoram’s Champhai district.

“Unit of Assam Rifles on 29 Apr apprehended one smuggler and recovered contraband items worth Rs 70.07 Lakhs in Chhungre Village, Champhai District in Mizoram,” Assam Rifles tweeted on April 30.
