Assam Rifles and custom department officials have seized 5600 kilograms (80 Bags) of poppy seeds worth rupees 25.20 lakhs during a joint operation in Mizoram’s Champhai district.

The operation was launched by the Serchhip battalion of Assam Rifles and officials of the central custom department on Monday at Zotlang-Ruantlang area along the Indo-Myanmar border, a statement from Assam Rifles said.

Acting on specific inputs, a team of Assam Rifles personnel found a vehicle loaded with poppy consignment without any legal documentation.

On being questioned, the driver of the vehicle revealed that the consignment had been smuggled from Myanmar.

The team handed over the contraband along with the seized vehicle to the customs prevention force in Champhai.

However, no person has been arrested in this connection so far.

Due to the significant rise in cross-border smuggling of drugs and arms, the Assam Rifles has established a strong anti-smuggling network to curb the menace.

Assam Rifles jawans had also recently seized two banned Chinese motorcycles along with arms in Champhai and Serchhip districts .

They also seized 261.4 grams of heroin smuggled from Myanmar.
