In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, the Assam Rifles troops deployed in Mizoram recovered huge consignments of smuggled areca nuts and poppy seeds worth over Rs 33.46 lakh.
The Serchhip Battalion of HQ 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) led the operation at Tlangsam in Mizoram’s Champhai district on Tuesday.

“The operation was carried out by a joint team of 8 Assam Rifles, 11 Assam Rifles and Customs department, Champhai based on specific information,” the HQ IGAR (East) said in a statement.

During the operation, the joint team was able to recover 5760 kgs of areca nuts worth Rs 22,46,400 and 40 bags of poppy seeds worth Rs 11,00,000.

The Customs department of Champhai district in Mizoram seized the contraband items and detained two individuals on Tuesday for further legal proceedings, the Assam Rifles said in the statement.
“Ongoing smuggling of areca nuts and poppy seeds is a major cause of concern for the state of Mizoram, especially along the India-Myanmar border,” the statement said.
“Assam Rifles, rightly christened as the ‘Sentinels of Northeast’ have continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram,” it added.
