The Arunachal Pradesh unit of the National People’s Party (NPP) on Wednesday observed the fourth death anniversary of former Lok Sabha Speaker and party founder Purno A. Sangma at the NPP office in Itanagar.
Arunachal Pradesh NPP president Gicho Kabak remembered the dynamism and popularity of Sangma who was born on September 1, 1947, at Chapahati village in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district.

Kabak also lauded the NPP founder’s sons – Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K. Sangma and home minister James K. Sangma – and daughter Agatha K. Sangma, who is the party’s MP from the Tura Lok Sabha constituency.
“Late Sangma, who was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 2017, was the brightest star of the Northeast in the realm of politics. His performance as a union labour minister and Speaker of the Lok Sabha were particularly brilliant and spoke volumes about his leadership and statesman-like qualities, and his skill at consensus building,” Kabak said.
The state NPP chief also highlighted late Sangma’s practical and down-to-earth approach that made him adjust to any situation and mingle freely with the people.

Mutchu Mithi, MLA and NPP’s national general secretary (political affairs) said late Sangma’s vision and thoughts have become very important for the country, particularly the northeastern states.
The state NPP resolved to carry forward his mission and vision for the greater interest of the nation.
Earlier, state NPP president Gicho Kabak, Mutchu Mithi, ex-MLA and working president Pani Taram, ex-MLA and national secretary Paknga Bage, former minister and state vice-president J.T. Takam, vice-president offered floral tributes to the portrait of the late Sangma.
Party spokesperson Nima Sangey Saling, state general secretaries Porchu Tamin and Kibi Kali, state secretary Techi Rahul and state NPP Youth president Kamsi Bage and other party members also offered floral tributes to late Sangma.
In the morning, the party’s youth wing distributed fruits among the patients of RK Mission Hospital.
