Mizoram continues to register a spike in COVID-19 cases as 581 more people have tested positive for the infection, pushing the state’s tally to 25,751, a health department official said on Thursday. 

115 children and two Border Security Force (BSF) jawans were among the newly infected people.

The death toll climbed to 116 as 74-year-old woman from Aizawl district succumbed to the infection at Zoram Medical College (ZMC) on Thursday morning, he said.  

Of the 581 fresh cases, 59 cases were confirmed at ZMC, while 25 cases were detected through TrueNat facilities and 497 were detected through Rapid Antigen Test.

Aizawl district reported the highest number of fresh cases at 272, followed by Kolasib district (129), Lunglei district (58), Mamit district (57), Lawngtlai district (49), Siaha district (8), Champhai district (5), Serchhip district (2) and Hnahthial district (1), the official said. 

Of the fresh patients, 283 patients have developed symptoms of COVID-19 and the remaining 298 were asymptomatic, he said. 

The single-day positivity rate is at 11.06 percent as the 581 fresh cases were detected from 5,253 sample tests. 

Mizoram now has 5,373 active cases, while 20,262 people have recovered from the disease including 267 on Wednesday.

The state has tested over 5.4 lakh samples till date. 

According to state immunisation officer Dr Lalzawmi, as many as 5,91,778 people have been inoculated, out of which over 1 lakh have been fully vaccinated till Wednesday.
