“The home minister is the most veteran and a grown man, he made a decision to resign from the post, he has made himself clear enough and I will accept it,” Lal Thanhawla said.

On Friday the four-time legislator elect from Tawi constituency R Lalzirliana submitted his resignation from the cabinet minister’s post citing that his government’s inability to fulfil the demand for a new district creation in his constituency.

Reacting to the demand of the home minister R Lalzirliana, the Congress party chief Lal Thanhawla said creating a new district takes not just lip syncing but involved huge amount of money, which at the moment the state government cannot afford.

“Fearing election fallout in 2008, the then ruling MNF government declared formation of new districts in Mizoram, reserve battalions of police and upgraded hundreds of schools without assessing the financial implications. They lose the election very badly, so formation of new district without logistical approach does not give votes,” Lal Thanhawla said.

R Lalzirliana has been the most trusted aide of Lal Thanhawla after he was elected from the then Saitual constituency in 1998.

He was the only Congress MLA from Aizawl district and the only MLA who spoke the official language of Mizoram fluently.

He was elected again from the constituency in 2003, 2008 and 2013, during which he rose to prominence in the political structure of the Mizoram PCC.

Lal Thanhawla stated that the Congress party leadership is yet to give any thoughts on who would occupy the vacant home ministers’ office.

“No thoughts are given yet,” Lal Thanhawla, who is on party campaign tour in the southern Lunglei city on Saturday, said.
