A delegation of the Meitei Pangal Schedule Tribe Demand Committee (MPSTDC) on Monday met Manipur governor Najma Heptulla at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal and placed their demand for inclusion of Meitei Pangals in the ST list.

The delegation of the MPSTDC, which has been demanding inclusion of the Meitei Pangals of Manipur in the list of Scheduled Tribe (ST), was led by the MLA of Wabagai Assembly constituency, Md Fazur Rahim.

Sharing a picture with the delegation of the MPSTDC on her Twitter handle, Manipur governor Heptulla said on Monday: “A delegation of Meitei Pangal Schedule Tribe Demand Committee led by Shri Md. Fazur Rahim, Hon’ble MLA (Wabagai A/C) called on me in connection with the inclusion of Meitei Pangals in the schedule tribe list.”

The Meitei Pangal Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee said they demand inclusion of the Meitei Pangals in the ST list for safeguarding and protecting the future of the community.

The Meitei Pangal Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee was founded in 2014 to raise voice for inclusion of the community in ST list.

The committee is of the view that if the Meitei Pangals are left behind in the development race, “Manipur cannot become properly developed”.

Meitei Pangals mainly live in Thoubal district of Manipur.

The Meitei Pangals or Manipuri Muslims are the minority group of people residing in Manipur.

They claim that they are indigenous people of Manipur.

The Meitei Pangal Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee in an earlier press conference had made it clear that their demand for inclusion of the Meitei Pangal community in the ST list is not to disturb any other community living in the state.
