Members of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in Meghalaya will elect a new Chief Executive Member (CEM) on Wednesday after People’s Democratic Front (PDF) leader P.N. Syiem resigned from the post before facing a floor test since he has lost support from majority of the members.

An emergent session of the KHADC was convened by the Governor on Tuesday, but Syiem did not come to the House to attend the session. Syiem instead sent his resignation letter from the CEM post to KHADC Chairman, L.G. Nongsiej.

Earlier, Shylla said that the MDCs have expected the CEM not to resign but face the session so that members can raise issues related to financial irregularities and alleged misrule in the Council.

UDP member from Laitumkhrah, Neil Antonio War said that the emergent session was demanded by the members not to topple the present Executive Committee led by Syiem but to discuss issues concerning the Council.

“The decision of the CEM not to face the session and resign from the post shows that there is something behind,” War said.

Shylla has the support of 17 members in the 29-member Council which comprised of five members from the United Democratic Party (UDP), four each from the National People’s Party (NPP) and People’s Democratic Front (PDF), three Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) and one independent.

If elected, Shylla would take over as the new CEM of the KHADC for the second time. He will be also the fourth CEM to be elected since 2014 till date.
