The Election Commission of India (ECI) in a notification issued on Monday asked the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Meghalaya to make arrangement for polling in the 43 Williamnagar (ST) Constituency on April 27, 2018.

It is to be noted that though the Meghalaya State Assembly  poll conducted on February 27, 2018, the polling in 43 Williamnagar (ST) Assembly constituency had to be adjourned due to the death of the NCP candidate of the constituency just a few days before the polling date.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate Jonathone N Sangma died in an IED attack by militants in East Garo Hills on February 18, 2018 night.

As per the notification, the last date for filing of nomination paper for the polls by the candidate sponsored by the Nationalists Congress Party (NCP) only, in pursuance of the Commission notice (No 492/MEGH-LA/2018) is April 10, 2018.

The scrutiny of the nomination papers of the candidate sponsored by the NCP will be held on April 11, 2018.

The date for withdrawal of candidature by the NCP candidate is April 13, 2018.

While the polling will be held on April 27, 2018, the election process shall be completed on May 2, 2018.

Apart from the deceased NCP candidate, there are 8 other candidates who filed their nominations for the Williamnagar seat in the 2018 Meghalaya elections.

Apart from NCP, the other parties, which have also fielded candidates for the Willamnagar seat are the National People’s Party (NPP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), United Democratic Party (UDP) and the Congress.

Former Meghalaya Minister Deborah C Marak is the Congress candidate, Jan N Arengh is an Independent candidate,  Lahatson N Marak is also an Independent candidate, Mahamsing M Sangma is the UDP candidate,  Marcuise N Marak is the NPP candidate, Santosh R Marak is the BJP candidate,  Sengbath R Marak  and Siljong R Marak are Independent candidates.

After the demise of their party candidate of Williamnagar seat, the NCP had decided to put up Krenilla R Marak, wife of Jonathone N Sangma, who was shot dead by unknown miscreants.
