The chief of National People’s Party (NPP) and Meghalaya chief minister, Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said that people in the Northeast have accepted the ideology of his party.
He said this in the light of two ministers of the BJP government in Arunachal Pradesh, 12 sitting MLAs and the party’s general secretary joining the NPP after the BJP denied party ticket to contest the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly elections slated for April 11.
In a video tapped statement released to media on Thursday, Conrad said that it is indeed heartening to witness that these leaders have expressed their faith in the ideology of the party. He welcomed all of them on behalf of the party, stated reports.
Conrad further exuded confidence that more people will join the NPP founded by his father and former Lok Sabha Speaker, late Purno Agitok Sangma.
On NPP becoming the only alternative political party in the northeastern states, Sangma said, “We are getting response from the people and they have started realizing the ideology and are joining our party. We expect more positive response, reactions and outcomes in future. It is early to say how things will go, but all I can say is that, people in the North East have started realizing the NPP’s ideology and are joining and supporting us.”
Speaking about the candidature of his sister Agatha Sangma and her chances of victory from Tura Parliamentary constituency, the NPP chief said, “Elections are never easy, and no election can be taken for granted. The first rule of election is to ensure that one is not overconfident. We are working hard and I am happy to see people’s response and supporting us.”
