National People’s Party (NPP) president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma arrived in Mizoram to campaign for party candidates in the upcoming Assembly polls slated for November 28.

The NPP is fielding candidates in nine constituencies of the 40-member Mizoram Legislative Assembly.

Meghalaya Home Minister and NPP national spokesperson, James K Sangma campaigned for party candidate B Suanzalang at Champhai North constituency.

The NPP chief, who arrived in Aizawl on Tuesday, will address election rallies at Vairengte, Kolasib, Kawnpui and Serchhip in the next three days.

“NPP has been working tirelessly in different parts of the region to champion the cause of the people as envisioned by our founder, late P A Sangma. The people of Mizoram have accepted the party and we are seeing good response. We are confident at the trend and NPP will play a formidable role as we expect a hung assembly in the state,” he said.

According to the Meghalaya Chief Minister, the party has put up candidates in those constituencies, where the response and chance of winning are very high.

“We are a new party in Mizoram and we want to make an impact in a positive way. We are optimistic that the results in most constituencies will be in our favour. We are focusing on few seats as part of our strategy,” he said.

Conrad also said that in a situation of a hung assembly, NPP with few numbers would be able to play a very important role in the formation of government.

“We are fighting on our own and have no alliance or understanding with any political party. We have our own identity and ideology as a political party. In the past elections too, we had no alliance with any political party. We believe in propagating the message of our party to the people of Mizoram. Post elections, we will look at the interest of the state and partner with a party that believes in taking Mizoram forward,” the Meghalaya Chief Minister said.

Stating that the NPP will strengthen its base in Mizoram through this Assembly election, the NPP president said, “This is our beginning in Mizoram and we will continue to work for the people of Mizoram and for the Northeast with a common goal and agenda to push the agenda of growth and development.”
