The Meghalaya BJP has demanded that Khasi and Garo be made compulsory subjects up to Class V for all students in all schools.
BJP state president Ernest Mawrie on Thursday said a meeting of the state office-bearers of the party discussed the National Education Policy 2020 and termed the new policy as “historic.”
Mawrie said the policy was long overdue, and lauded the Central government for the “holistic overhauling” of the education system in the country.

The BJP leader demanded that the state government implement the provisions of the National Education Policy immediately.
He also informed that the meeting of the state office-bearers of the party unanimously demanded that Khasi and Garo be made as compulsory subjects for all students in all schools of the state.
“All schools in the state, whether government or private, or run by various religious or social organisations, should be brought under the new national education policy, and it should be mandatory for them to teach at least one local language as a subject for all students,” Mawrie said.
The state BJP president also informed that he would write to the Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma and education minister Lahkmen Rymbui on the need to make Khasi and Garo as compulsory subjects.
