SHILLONG: In response to the distressing incident involving the harassment of a missionary nun from Garo Hills in Meghalaya in a public bus in Assam last week, the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) has vehemently condemned the event and called for concerted efforts from both the Assam and Meghalaya governments to apprehend the perpetrators.

The MSCW expressed deep concern over the implications of such incidents on the victim, both as a woman and as a religious figure.

Stressing the need for collaboration between the two state governments, the Commission urged swift action to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

Emphasizing Meghalaya’s commitment to inclusivity and respect for all religious beliefs, the Commission reaffirmed the importance of upholding democratic principles and fostering religious tolerance.

It underscored the necessity for maintaining peace and accountability, condemning any actions that dehumanize individuals based on their religious affiliation.

The incident occurred when the nun boarded a bus from Dudhnoi town to Goalpara town in Assam on February 17 morning, only to face harassment and intimidation from a group of passengers and the bus conductor.

She was subsequently forced off the bus in an isolated area along the highway, leaving her shocked and traumatized.
