Guwahati: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) in Meghalaya has condemned the alleged Rs 2,300-crore scam in the Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura road project and demanded accountability from those responsible.

VPP leader and Shillong MP Ricky Andrew J Syngkon emphasized the severity of the issue, stating that public money is at stake and contractors must deliver quality work.

The project, approved in 2010 under the Centre’s Special Road Development Programme-North East, initially valued at Rs 1,303.83 crore, ballooned to Rs 2,366.77 crore after revisions.

Nine individuals, including senior state engineers and officials from private companies in Telangana and Haryana, face allegations in the FIR.

Syngkon also called to address illegal coal mining and transportation with the central government, citing environmental harm and revenue losses for Meghalaya.

This concern echoes the Meghalaya High Court’s previous warnings about the state’s complicity in illegal coal mining.
