Shillong: The Meghalaya government’s decision to restrict heavy vehicle movement on the Umiam dam-cum-bridge has led to a reported significant 40 per cent increase in transportation costs from Guwahati to Shillong.

This change has resulted in higher prices of essential commodities in Shillong.

It has been reported that transporters have to take 80-90 km detour via Mawryngkneng which in return is increasing costs of fuel as well as fare.

Freight cost from Guwahati to Shillong rises to Rs 1.40 per kg, compared to Re 1 to Jowai.

However, the alternative route may take another year to be completed, reports stated.

Transporters, requesting anonymity, criticized the decision, stating it is “not business-friendly” and contributes to inflation.

The restrictions, in place for three months, limit vehicle weight to 9 metric tonnes due to the dam’s retrofitting work.
