TURA: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has announced former Meghalaya minister Zenith Sangma as its candidate for the Tura Lok Sabha seat.

The Tura Lok Sabha seat in Meghalaya is currently being held by the National People’s Party (NPP) Agatha Sangma, sister of chief minister Conrad Sangma.

In a statement, the TMC said, “Under the guidance and inspiration of chairperson Mamata Banerjee, we are pleased to announce the candidacy of Zenith Sangma for the parliamentary constituency of Tura (ST) seat.”

Zenith Sangma, brother of TMC leader and former Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma, served as the sports minister of Meghalaya from 2013 to 2018.

He has represented the Rangsakona constituency thrice – in 2003, 2013 and 2018, initially as a Congress candidate before joining TMC in 2021.

However, in the 2023 Meghalaya assembly elections, Zenith Sangma faced defeat in the Rangsakona seat by a margin of 788 votes.

Meanwhile, the Congress has nominated Saleng Sangma for the Tura Lok Sabha seat, while the BJP is yet to announce its candidate for the upcoming election.
