The incomplete smart road in Lachumiere, one of the 17 Smart City projects in Meghalaya, has been particularly problematic.
This development was announced by Meghalaya deputy chief minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.
“The first phase of the smart road project has been cancelled. We already had a meeting with the deputy chief minister in charge of PWD (Roads) and myself due to the significant difficulties faced in implementing the project. Therefore, we have cancelled it. Only 3-4% of the work has been completed,” Meghalaya deputy chief minister Sniawbhalang Dhar informed.

The Meghalaya government has decided to develop a fresh estimate for resurfacing all city roads under the state plan through the PWD department.
“The preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently in progress,” Dhar added.
Dhar stated, “We cancelled the project because it was not feasible and no land was available. The officers will now prepare an incomplete financial bill. Consequently, we have decided to resurface all important roads within the city.”
He noted that only a small amount had been spent on the failed smart road project.
In addition, Dhar recently held a review meeting on the progress of all Smart City projects.
He mentioned that several projects might be inaugurated in August and September.
“According to reports, all projects are progressing well. We hope they will be very beneficial for the public once completed. For example, the Polo markets, Laitumkhrah market, and ICCC will be ready soon. Currently, around 12-13 parking facilities are also under development as part of both the Smart City and state plans. We are monitoring the progress, and my officers are working to ensure that these projects are completed within the stipulated time,” he said.
