Pressure groups in Meghalaya have reiterated their demand for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in the State.
The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Ri-Bhoi Youth Front (RBYF), Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) and Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) have reiterated their demand for ILP implementation.
The demand for ILP has once again gained traction after a conglomeration of the four pressure groups convened a meeting at Byrnihat in Meghalaya with heads of different villages, especially those along the Assam-Meghalaya border areas.
The pressure groups also demanded the Meghalaya Government to implement the Meghalaya Residents’ Safety & Security Act (MRSSA) in “letter and spirit”.
The leaders of the four pressure groups stated that implementation of the MRSSA is necessary to “curb the problem of illegal immigrants and influx”.
The four pressure groups also reportedly accused the Meghalaya Government and the Centre of ‘fooling’ the people of the State.
“The central government along with the state government has fooled the citizens of Meghalaya from time to time by their false promises and assurances that the demand for implementation of the Inner Line Permit will be the topmost agenda of the government,” the leaders said.
“We adopted a resolution to support the demand for ILP in Meghalaya and to continue agitating for it until the government relents,” Ken Syiem, the traditional chief of Raid Marwet said.
