Guwahati: The National People’s Party (NPP) said it was optimistic about winning the upcoming Gambegre by-poll in Meghalaya, citing the trend that the party in power usually emerges victorious in such elections.

According to Cabinet Minister and senior NPP leader AT Mondal, the difference between general elections and by-elections lies in the fact that people vote based on development needs when a party is already in power.

Mondal said that the ruling party’s win in a by-poll is not a guaranteed rule, and they will need to work hard to convince the people of their ability to provide better services.

He claimed that NPP candidate Mehtab Chandee A Sangma has more chance of winning the polls as she is actively involved in understanding the local situation.

The Gambegre by-poll will see a contest between Mehtab Sangma of the NPP, Sadhiarani Sangma of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Jingjang Marak of the Congress and Bernard Marak of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
