Newly elected members of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in Meghalaya will take oath on Wednesday at 11 am.

The election of new chairman of the KHADC will take place on Friday at 11 am.

The oath-taking is also the first session of the new council.

The session was summoned by Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy on Monday.

The Governor has also directed the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills district, Matsiewdor War, to administer the oath of office to the new members and to conduct the election for the post of chairman.

The United Democratic Party (UDP) has chosen its veteran member from Shella constituency, Teiñwell Dkhar for the CEM post, and he has the support of the National People’s Party (NPP), Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), People’s Democratic Front (PDF) and Independents.

Dkhar, who was elected for the fourth consecutive time from Shella since 2004, is at present the chairman of the council.

The UDP and NPP have seven members each, two members of the HSPDP, one member of the PDF, and two Independents.

Gigur Myrthong, who is the MLA and MDC of the NPP from Mawshynrut constituency, was elected to be the candidate for the chairman’s post.

The Congress has not taken any decision whether to contest for the post of chairman and CEM’s post.

The deputy CEM’s post will go to two-time member of the NPP from Sohryngkham constituency, Pynïaid Sing Syiem.

The Congress has decided to sit in the Opposition if its offer to the UDP to work together in forming the new Executive Committee does not materialise.

However, the opposition party is also keeping a close watch over the political development in the KHADC.

The Congress emerged as the single largest party having 10 seats in the KHADC.

In Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council, the NPP will form the executive committee with the UDP.
