Guwahati: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has remained defiant in the ongoing campaign against migrant labourers in Meghalaya, despite the state government’s ongoing examination of mechanisms to address illegal immigration.

The KSU claims to have identified over 2,500 migrant workers lacking proper documentation, including EPIC (Election Photo Identity Card), PAN (Permanent Account Number), and Aadhaar cards.

They stated that the absence of a clear system, like the Inner Line Permit (ILP) or the Meghalaya Residents’ Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), necessitates their intervention.

“The government keeps saying these mechanisms are under review,” stated KSU president Lambokstar Marngar. “If there’s no clear plan, we will find ways to assist the state.”

The KSU has further intended to maintain its document checks on migrant workers and pressure the government for MRSSA implementation.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has previously clarified that the Inter-State Migrant Workmen Act allows for labourer registration, but not work permits.
