The Indian Navy divers detected the fourth body of a miner inside a flooded coal mine in East Jaiñtia Hills of Meghalaya on Monday.

Spokesperson for the rescue operation, R. Susngi said that the fourth body of a miner has decomposed. The body is yet to be retrieved.

The fourth body was detected with the help of an underwater remotely operated vehicle (UROV). The body was detected at 230 feet deep in the same rat-hole coal mine at 4:32 pm.

As many as 15 miners were trapped inside the coal mine on December 13, but only one body has been recovered.

The Navy divers also detected a wooden cart about 20 feet short of the body.

Earlier, the second body and third body were also detected, but yet to be recovered till date.

The UROV had detected the first body on January 16 and the second on January 26 from the rat-hole coal mine.

The Indian Navy could recover only one body of the miner, Amir Hussain on January 23. The miner was from Assam’s Chirang district.

The Coal India Limited, Kirloskar Brothers Limited and KSB continue to pump water out from the abandoned coal mine.

The Supreme Court on February 4, 2019 maintained that the trapped miners in Meghalaya seemed to have not alive.

According to reports, referring to the 15 miners, who were trapped in an illegal rat-hole mine in East Jaintia Hills district, Justice AK Sikri of the Supreme Court had said, “It seems to be certain that nobody is alive.”

Justice AK Sikri had said this during the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) which was filed in the apex court seeking urgent steps for rescuing the miners trapped in the rat-hole mine since December 13 last year.
