The Meghalaya government plans to conduct an afforestation drive in Cherrapunji in East Khasi Hills.

The state government will be conducting the plantation programme in collaboration with the Assam Rifles.

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday met officials of the state government to discuss the funding, procurement of adequate numbers of saplings, manpower and many other aspects related to the programme.

The minister also stressed on the need to conduct awareness programmes to educate the locals about the need to plant more trees to conserve the degrading ecology of Cherrapunji and its adjoining areas.

He also instructed the officials to prepare a strategy to execute the afforestation drive.

“Plans for afforestation in Cherrapunjee in partnership with @official_dgar was discussed including funding, collaboration efforts, manpower, procurement of saplings & awareness programmes. Team instructed to prepare a roadmap to execute the mission,” Conrad Sangma tweeted.
