Guwahati: National Award-winning filmmaker and Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) faculty member Dominic Sangma was allegedly assaulted by two men near the Jollang-Rakap road in Itanagar on Wednesday evening, police said.
The incident reportedly occurred after Sangma intervened when the two men were allegedly harassing a group of FTII students.
Sangma, who heads the Department of Screenwriting at FTII’s Jote campus, was returning from an evening walk at around 6:30 pm when he noticed the incident.
According to a complaint filed by Sangma’s wife, the filmmaker saw two men, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, carrying bamboo sticks and allegedly bullying the students. When Sangma intervened, the two men allegedly attacked him with their fists and bamboo sticks.
An FIR was subsequently registered at Balijan police station under Sections 115(2), 117(2), 126 and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The accused were identified in the FIR as Techi Nanu and Techi Sanjay, both residents of Rakap village.
The complaint further alleged that an FTII security guard and four students were also assaulted and wrongfully restrained during the incident.
Police have launched an investigation into the allegations. Further details are awaited.
Sangma, who hails from Meghalaya, is known for his work in Garo-language cinema. His film Rapture won the Best Garo Film award at the 66th National Film Awards.
