Meghalaya Inspector General of Prisons M Kharkrang on Thursday launched ePrison at the Williarnnagar District Prison in presence of officials from the National informatics Centre (NIC).
ePrison is a web technology-based application software, developed by using the latest tools available with the various functional integrated with it.

“This IT set-up shall help administrators of the state prison department,” said IPS officer Kharkrang in a statement.
“This shall reduce burden of the government agencies and duplicity of their efforts,” he added.
IG Kharkrang also said the technology shall reduce the delay in processing the information.

“This will also automate processes and functions convenient and transparent service to all the stakeholders through ICT,” Kharkrang said.
The inmates’ information shall be made available to all the prisons, police and intelligence and central agencies for various other purposes throughout the state, he further said.
NIC has been involved in providing IT support to prisons and has been pioneering in these areas.
