The by-election to the Selsella Assembly seat of Meghalaya, that became vacant after the death of sitting legislator Clement Marak, is likely to be held sometime in early next year.

According to sources, the State Election Department has already informed the Election Commission of India (ECI) about the vacancy after it was formally notified by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly about the vacancy.

According to sources, as November is an examination month for the students of the students, and Christmas preparations begin immediately with the advent of December, it is very likely that the by-election will take place only next year.

Sources further added that the by-election to the Selsella Assembly seat may also take place simultaneously along with the parliamentary elections scheduled to be held early next year.

However, the political parties in the State are in no hurry to select their respective candidates for the by-elections after the seat fell vacant with the death of Marak on October 8 last.

Both the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) and opposition Congress are expected to field their respective candidates, apart from other regional parties during the by-elections.
