The Congress in Meghalaya has urged all the Chief Ministers in the North East to be united against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958.
The demand came after the recent incident that took place in Nagaland.

The Congress stated that the AFSPA has a very dark history and it cannot be in force anymore.
The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee said that Union Government through the AFSPA can use the Army and the armed forces for counter-insurgency operations but at the same time, the law prevents the security personnel from being prosecuted if they commit any sort of crime.

The MPCC further stated that the AFSPA in states can be imposed by the Centre after consultation with the state government and so now, the CMs in the NE states should unite against it.
The MPCC also said the states should clearly tell the Central Government that the police in the state can handle the situation in the state related to law and order.

Lyngdoh said the AFSPA can only be imposed by the Centre in consultation with the state governments. Thus, each state in its memo to the Centre must convey that the AFSPA is not required and that the respective state police force can adequately deal with the law and order.
