Guwahati: The Border Security Force (BSF) in Meghalaya thwarted a cattle smuggling attempt along the India-Bangladesh border and apprehended a Bangladeshi national, according to an official statement released on Tuesday.

Acting on a tip-off, BSF troops from the 172 Bn laid an ambush in the Rattachera area of East Jaintia Hills.

The team apprehended a Bangladeshi national attempting to smuggle three buffaloes across the border.

The apprehended individual, identified as Mohammad Kamil Ahmed from Donachera, Bangladesh, is now in the custody of Umkiang Police Station for further legal proceedings.

The seized buffaloes have also been handed over to the police.

It may be mentioned that cattle smuggling is a major issue in the border areas as most of these are stolen cattle.

A source said that since cattle require a lot of patience to rear and bring up to a state for selling, smugglers usually try to smuggle stolen cattle.

Investigation regarding the seized cattle in Tuesday’s operation has been initiated.
