The Meghalaya Cabinet under the chairmanship of chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday approved the creation of a new district named Eastern West Khasi Hills.
The new district will be created by upgrading the Mairang civil sub-division.
Informing about the Cabinet’s decision, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma in a tweet on Friday said, “Proposal to upgrade the Mairang Civil Sub-Division to a full-fledged district has been approved by the Cabinet today.”

Stating that the new district will be named Eastern West Khasi Hills, the Meghalaya chief minister informed that the new district will be inaugurated on November 10, 2021.
“Happy to announce that the new district will be named Eastern West Khasi Hills and will be inaugurated on 10th Nov 2021,” chief minister Sangma added.

Mairang is now a sub-division under the West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya.
The Mairang town is located about 40-45 kilometres from Meghalaya capital city Shillong.
The Eastern West Khasi Hills will become the 12th district of Meghalaya.
