SHILLONG: The BJP has decided to opt out of fielding candidates for the Tura and Shillong Lok Sabha seats in Meghalaya, throwing support behind NPP candidates in these constituencies.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra confirmed the decision, citing instructions from BJP national president JP Nadda.

This move, aimed at honoring NDA alliance partners, is seen as a strategic shift in the campaign dynamics, potentially easing competition for NPP contenders Agatha K Sangma and M Ampareen Lyngdoh.

A total of 11 hopefuls vied for the BJP ticket, with 5 contenders eyeing the Shillong seat and 6 aiming for Tura.

In the Shillong parliamentary seat race, Meghalaya cabinet minister AL Hek was joined by advocate Dr Fenela Lyngdoh Nonglait, former BJP state president Ernest Mawrie, state BJYM president Mewaker Lyngdoh, and Sumitra Laloo as ticket aspirants.

Meanwhile, the Tura Lok Sabha seat saw a competitive field with contenders including sitting Tura GHADC MDC Bernard N Marak, former MLAs Winnerson D Sangma and KC Boro, former MDC Boston Marak, Riya Sangma, and Thomas Marak.
