As filing of nomination is going on in full throttle for Meghalaya Assembly polls, some interesting candidatures have also come up.

On Monday, there were two instances where a father-son and a father-daughter duo filed their nominations for the Meghalaya Assembly polls slated for February 27.

While the father, Charles Pyngrope, filed his nomination papers to contest from Nongthymmai constituency, his son, David Nongrum would contest from Mawryngkneng constituency.

Pyngrope was the Assembly Speaker from 2009 to 2013 and represented the erstwhile Sohryngkham Assembly constituency.

He lost the election in 2013 from Nongthymmai constituency while his son got elected as an independent candidate from Mawryngkneng in 2013.

Both father and son are now in the Congress, and they came to file their nominations together in Shillong on Monday.

“I am so happy that I am with dad now contesting from the same party. In 2013, I could not get Congress ticket, but I contested and won as an independent candidate from Mawryngkneng,” Nongrum told media persons after filing his nomination papers along with his father.

Nongrum also expressed confidence that he would come back as MLA.

Pyngrope too exuded confidence that people would elect him from Nongthymmai this time.

The father-daughter – Pynshai Manik Syiem and his daughter Teilinia S Thangkhiew – will fight this election from the same party, the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP).

While Syiem, the former MLA of Mylliem constituency, is contesting from Mawphlang constituency, his daughter Teilinia is fighting from Mylliem, which is being represented by Congress Minister Ronnie V Lyngdoh.

In 2013, Syiem and Telinia fought as independent candidates from Mawphlang and Mylliem constituency respectively.

In the elections to district councils in 2014, Syiem fought as candidate of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement and his daughter, Teilinia as the candidate of the HSPDP.

“I am more than happy this time that I got to contest together from the same party with my father,” Teilinia, who is also a member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) told media persons.

Teilinia also expressed confidence that she and her father would get elected to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly in this election.
