Guwahati: The State Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) has seized 40.12 grams of heroin valued at around Rs 7 lakh and arrested two persons in Shillong’s Pynthorumkhrah area.
ANTF Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar said on Monday that the operation was launched based on intelligence inputs about the transportation of narcotics from Silchar in Assam to Shillong.
Acting on the information, ANTF personnel were deployed at strategic locations. A vehicle bearing registration number ML-05-AD-1301 was intercepted at Pynthorumkhrah during the operation, Kumar said.
The occupants of the vehicle were identified as Jamir Hussain Laskar, son of Late Makabul Ali Laskar of Pangram in Assam’s Cachar district, and Joy Ryntathiang, son of Late D Chyne of Umkdait, Nongmensong, Shillong.
A search of the vehicle, conducted in accordance with legal procedures, led to the recovery of four soap boxes containing suspected heroin. The substance was subsequently confirmed as heroin, with a net weight of 40.12 grams and an estimated illicit market value of around Rs 7 lakh, the SP said.
The contraband was seized and both individuals were arrested after completion of the required legal procedures under the NDPS Act, 1985.
Kumar said the investigation is continuing to determine the source and intended destination of the seized narcotics, besides identifying other individuals who may be linked to the alleged trafficking network.
He said the operation reflected the continued efforts of the Meghalaya Police and State ANTF to disrupt narcotics supply chains and investigate organised drug-trafficking networks operating in and through the state.
