In two dusk-to-dawn operations, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of East Khasi Hills Police seized contraband including ganja, weighing approximately 850 kgs.

In the first operation, carried out on a tip-off, one Maruti DZire car, bearing registration number ML 05J 5886, suspected to be carrying drugs, was roaming around Mawlai at 5 pm on Tuesday.

Naka was put in place immediately and the car was intercepted by a team of Mawlai P.S and ANTF.

On questioning, a police statement, said one accused, Richard Wahlang produced the drugs which were kept under the seat on which he was sitting.

The entire episode happened in front of two respectable witnesses of the locality.

The co-accused, John Fiscal Lyngkhoi, was driving the vehicle.

He was partner-in-crime of Richard Wahlang.

It is to be noted that both the accused are history-sheeters and are facing trial in six different cases including murder, kidnapping and Arms Act.

A total of 10 soap boxes containing contraband weighing 109.97 gms were seized from the possession of both the accused.

A case has been registered under section 21(b) NDPS Act at Mawlai P.S.

In another operation, the ANTF team had received information at around 1 am on Wednesday that one truck, bearing registration number NL 01 K 7498, has been detected by locals of Mawlyngngad village in suspicious circumstances.

The locals informed the police of Sohryngkham Outpost who in turn informed the Superintendent of Police (City), Shillong.

The SP (City) then rushed to Sohryngkham.

During questioning, the driver of the truck disclosed that ganja has been stashed in one hidden compartment in the truck.

The search and seizure of ganja, weighing approximately 850 kgs, was done as per procedures established under the NDPS Act.

Both the accused, the driver and the helper, were produced before the Magistrate and further investigation is on to nab other accused involved.

It appears to be a big racket as the hidden compartment is welded into the body of the truck and it would require only an expert eye to detect.

The Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, C. laudia A Lyngwa thanked the local residents, VDPs and members of NGOs such as KSU and FKJGP for helping the police.
