Meghalaya: 107 battery cells seized in Jowai, 6 arrested

West Jaintia Hills police in Meghalaya seized 107 battery cells from Mooralong in Jowai and arrested six people in this connection on Wednesday.

The battery cells were recovered from Rymbai Gas Agency godown at Mooralong during an operation carried out by police in the early morning on Wednesday.

According to information, at 4.45 am on Wednesday, the Officer-in-Charge of Jowai Police Station informed a top level police official that several suspects involved in a battery theft case were detained at Mooralong.

Accordingly, a special police team led by the top level cop rushed to the spot for providing necessary assistance.

At around 5 am, the special police team reached the scrap yard located in the premises of Rymbai Gas Agency godown at Mooralong in Jowai. The team observed that the police led by a sub-inspector detained three people inside a car.

The three were identified as Abduch Chalam, Mujanil Ali and Kajimuddin Ali.

On being informed that several suspects managed to escape, a search operation was conducted in and around the area.

“During the search, two suspects were seen fleeing from the back side of the premises. After chasing on foot for a few hundred metres, one Raham Ali was outrun and apprehended. However, the other unidentified suspect managed to escape,” informed a top level police official.

On searching the scrap yard premises, suspected stolen batteries were found concealed underneath the area for rest located inside the quarter.

Accordingly, all the top level police officers were informed about the detention.

At around 6 am, an additional superintendent of police of West Jaintia Hills district arrived and accordingly, he directed the in-charge of Phramer Traffic Cell and a sub-inspector of Jowai Police Station to report at the earliest for taking necessary action in connection with the case.

At around 6.30 am, two sub-inspectors arrived at the spot.

“After conducting thorough search in the premises, 107 broken battery cells, 19 plastic sacks containing battery cell plates, 1 angle grinder along with 2 grinder plates, 1 sword and 1 white colour Maruti Gypsy with registration number ML 04-3116 (chasis and engine number tampered and untraceable) were recovered and seized from the spot,” the official further informed.

Six people – Kajim Uddin Ali, Raham Ali, Hastakar Ali, Md Mujanil Ali, Abduch Chalam and Sur Jamal Ali were apprehended for taking necessary action in connection with a case registered at Jowai PS [No 50(3) 19 under section 380 IPC], he added.

According to information, two police constable received injuries while trying to restrain the accused.
