Meghalaya’s ‘Cement Tycoon’ who owns 4 cement & 3 mining companies

Meet Meghalaya’s ‘Cement Tycoon’

Meet the mining and cement tycoon of Northeast India. He owns four cement companies, three mining companies and one power company in Meghalaya.

Yes, we are talking about Phone Syih. He is a tribal Jaintia from Thangskai in East Jaintia hills of Meghalaya.

And as per records with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Phone Syih is Director with eight companies related to mining and cement production. Phone Syih’s Director Identification Number (DIN) is 00421643.

Phone Syih represents Meghalaya Cements Ltd, Adhunik Cement Ltd, Cosmos Cement Ltd, Meghabond Cement Ltd, Canis Mines & Minerals Ltd, Jaintia Hills Mines & Minerals Ltd and Jaintia Hills Power Ltd as Director.

Very few people in East Jaintia Hills probably know that Phone Syih is Director of so many companies, including some of the cement giants of Northeast India.

According to the locals, the business tycoon is socially introverted. He has no Facebook Page, and is not on Twitter.

Phone Syih does not have an Instagram account, and even his photos are not available on the internet or on social media.

His only social commitment in the area is supporting the Jaintia Eastern College at Khliehriat. He is an Executive Member of the Sponsoring Body of the college.

People in East Jaintia Hills district know Phone Syih just as a contractor for the Public Health Engineering Department.

How did Phone Syih, who was a government contractor, get so much resource to own 4 cement and 3 mining companies?

Despite repeated attempts by Northeast Now team, Phone Syih did not receive his mobile phone.  His comment will be updated if he issues a statement in future.

A close investigation into Phone Syih’s corporate profile showed that Meghalaya Cements Limited, the producers of Topcem Cement was the first company to pick him as a director.

On June 12, 2003, Phone Syih was inducted by Topcem Cement as a Wholetime Director of the company.

His corporate profile with Topcem Cement inspired the promoters of Jaintia Hills Power Limited to pick him as a Director on September 20, 2004.

After the two corporate experiences, there was no looking back for Phone Syih. On April 17, 2006, he took over as a Director of Adhunik Cement Limited.

Adhunik Cement Pvt Ltd is producer of Dalmia Cement in East Jaintia hills of Meghalaya.

Interestingly, Phone Syih’s corporate profile sky-rocketed between 2015 and 2020, and he joined five more companies as Directors.

On December 28, 2015, he took over as Director of two companies — Cosmos Cement Ltd and Sutnga Mines Pvt Ltd.

Phone Syih joined the board of two more companies on August 24, 2018 — Meghabond Cement Ltd and Jaintia Hills Mines and Minerals Ltd.

He joined the last company one week before the nationwide lockdown was clamped because of COVID19 pandemic.

On March 16, 2020, Phone Syih joined Canis Mines and Minerals LLP as a Designated Director.

Canis Mines and Minerals LLP is being promoted by four Directors of Topcem Cement — Kailash Lohia, Nishant Garodia, Mahendra Agarwal and Amit Agarwal.

It is still ambiguous as to why so many corporate giants in the mining and cement sectors in Meghalaya are picking only one person from East Jaintia hills district as their Local Directors.
