The Government of India through a notification has appointed Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew as a new Judge of the Meghalaya High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.

The notification issued by Sadanand Vasant Date, Joint Secretary to the Government of India, on Saturday stated: “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (I) of Article 217 of the Constitution or India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew to be a Judge of the Meghalaya High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”

As per a ‘Bar & Bench’ report published on Saturday, stated that the Central Government has issued the notification of the appointment of Senior Advocate Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew as judge of the Meghalaya High Court in pursuant to the Supreme Court Collegium’s resolution in September this year.

The report also stated Thangkhiew was recommended by the Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court on February 26, 2018.

The Supreme Court Collegium had considered it fit to appoint Thangkhiew on the basis of the interaction and the material placed before it, it added.

It may be mentioned that apart from the new Judge for Meghalaya High Court, the President has notified the appointment of new judges in Gauhati High Court, Orissa High Court, Madras High Court and Delhi High Court.

Through a notification, the Government of India has also notified appointment of Sanjay Kumar Medhi and Nania Tagia as new Additional Judges of Guahati High Court.

While Dr. Akshay Kumar Mishra has been appointed as Judge of Orissa High Court,  B. Pugalendhi has been appointed as Additional Judge of Madras High Court.
