Meghalaya deputy chief minister Tynsong on Monday said the inter-district private transport will remain closed during the lockdown period while the movement of private vehicles in Shillong will be restricted to odd and even numbers on alternate days.

The decision has been taken as preventive measures to contain the spread of coronavirus in the state.

Tynsong said on March 24, 26, and 28, the private vehicles with ‘odd numbers’ will ply in Shillong city while vehicles with ‘even numbers’ will ply on March 25, 27 and 29.

On March 26, local taxis with even numbers of series ML05-B to ML05-K, and auto rickshaws with even numbers of series ML05 C 0390 to ML05 C 8332 will ply only in East Khasi Hills district.

Besides inter-district, the Meghalaya government has also banned the entry of people from outside the state as well as stopped the operation of inter-state public transport like buses, and tourist taxis till March 31.

Earlier it was reported that the announcement on government order prohibiting plying of inter-district public transport vehicles left thousands of people stranded especially those coming from West Khasi Hills district on Monday.

All commercial vehicles coming from Nongstoin, the district headquarter of West Khasi Hills district were stopped at Mairang.

Many drivers and commuters blamed the district administration of West Khasi Hills district for not publicising the government’s order properly on Sunday night, which led to them facing an unnecessary problem.

“The insensitivity of the district administration has caused undue consequences to commuters of West Khasi hills. Most people did not know the order of DC,” said a commuter.
