The ECI in its notification said after taking into consideration various factors like local festivals, electoral rolls, weather conditions, the Commission has decided to hold by-election to fill the vacancy of South Tura constituency.

By-election to South Tura legislative assembly constituency was necessitated following resignation of first time NPP legislator, Agatha K Sangma. Agatha resigned to pave the way for her elder brother chief minister Conrad K Sangma. Conrad is still an MP from Tura and likely to tender his resignation this week.

Agatha, who contested and won from the prestigious South Tura constituency in Meghalaya will have to contest three elections in a year. First she had contested from South Tura and won, now she will contest from Tura Lok Sabha seat and she will contest from the Tura Lok Sabha seat again in 2019.
