The Congress is likely to announce the list of candidates for the Meghalaya Assembly elections before the Republic Day.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma told media persons on Tuesday evening in Shillong, after a meeting of the Pradesh Election Committee and Manifesto Committee that the State Congress has conveyed its desire to the central leadership to complete the exercise before the Republic Day.

The meeting also discussed about the Chief Minister’s plans to contest the upcoming polls from Songsak as well as his home constituency, Ampati.
“The party at the State level has completed the exercise at its level and the names would now be presented before the screening committee of the All Indian Congress Committee (AICC). The names will be announced with the approval of the AICC president, Rahul Gandhi,” said Sangma.
According to the CM, there are few constituencies where names of candidates would be finalised between 24 and 48 hours and sent to the AICC Screening Committee.

Regarding five MLAs, who want to join the Congress, Chief Minister Sangma said that the party has examined their candidature and few of them will appear in the list of the party’s candidates.
Earlier during the day, the papers of as many as 90 candidates were checked by the Meghalaya Pradesh Election Committee headed by State president Celestine Lyngdoh, where the Chief Minister, Congress MP from Shillong and State Congress working president Vincent H Pala, veteran leader and advisor to the State Congress, DD Lapang besides other members.
