The United Democratic Party (UDP) has elected three-time legislator from Mairang constituency, Metbah Lyngdoh as the new leader of the legislature party in Assembly.
Lyngdoh’s election as the legislature party leader came following the demise of veteran UDP legislator from Shella, late Dr Donkupar Roy Dkhar.
Dr Donkupar Roy, who was the Assembly speaker and president of the UDP, passed away on July 28.
This was informed by education minister Lahkmen Rymbui, who is the UDP legislator from Amlarem constituency, after a meeting of UDP legislators on Monday evening.
He said the meeting has unanimously elected Lyngdoh as the new legislature party leader.
Lyngdoh is the minister in-charge tourism, water resources, excise and other departments in the NPP-led MDA government.
Two Independent MLAs – Samuel Sangma and SK Sun, who have become associate members of the UDP, attended the meeting held at the residence of Lyngdoh.
The UDP has six MLAs after the death of Dr Donkupar.
However, along with the two associate members, the UDP has eight MLAs.
