A notification for the bye election to Shella Assembly constituency was issued on Monday, but major political parties in Meghalaya are yet to announce their candidates.
The bye election was necessitated to fill up the vacant Shella seat following the demise of sitting MLA and Assembly speaker Donkupar Roy on July 28.
So far only the United Democratic Party (UDP), an ally of the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has named Donkupar’s son Balajied Synrem as its candidate.
The opposition Congress is likely to announce its candidate on Tuesday.
Former nominated IAS officer Wilfred Khyllep has also applied for Congress ticket.
The NPP has not made its mind clear whether it will support the UDP candidate or field its own candidate.
There are also Independent candidates who will join the fray including Komen Laitmon.
When Laitmon was with the Hills State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), he was about to contest from Shella in the 2018 Assembly polls.
He, however, missed an opportunity to contest after the HSPDP and UDP forged the pre-poll alliance.
The last date for filing of nominations is September 30.
