The mortal remains of Meghalaya assembly speaker Donkupar Roy was taken from Shillong to his home town Sohra on Tuesday.

The body of the late Speaker moved out of the official residence Crinoline View Bungalow here at 2.40 pm after a short prayer service and tributes paid by thousands of people who gathered there.

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma and his ministers accompanied the body to Sohra along with family members, relatives and thousands of supporters.

The state funeral will take place at Sohra on Wednesday at 12.30 pm.

After the state funeral at Sohra, the body will be taken for burial to his native village Shella at 3 pm.

Born on November 10, 1954, Roy passed away at Medanta Hospital in New Delhi on Sunday following brief illness.

The Meghalaya government has declared three-day state mourning and all revenue and magisterial courts and educational institutions in the state will remain closed on the funeral day to pay the last respect to the late Speaker.

The three-day state mourning was from Monday to Wednesday.

The National Flag will fly at half mask on government buildings throughout the state, and no official entertainment should be organised during the period of state mourning.

Among the dignitaries who paid tributes to the late Speaker include Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Sarma met the wife and children of Roy and other political leaders and conveyed his condolences.
