A two-day meeting of the Group of Ministers (GoM) under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will be held on Wednesday and Thursday at Hotel Radisson Blu in Guwahati, an official press release stated.

The team is led by the Chairman and Transport Minister of Rajasthan, Yunus Khan and transport ministers of various states as its members.

Assam will be the host state for the ‘Group of Ministers Meeting – 2018’.

In total, 24 states will be participating in the two-day programme.

Senior officials comprising Additional Chief Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, Commissioners and Secretaries of Transport Department from various states will discuss issues related to road safety measures on Wednesday from 2 pm to 5 pm at the venue.

The GoM representing states like Meghalaya, Nagaland, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Kerela, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Goa, Haryana, Jharkhand etc will meet and discuss road safety parameters on Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm at the said venue.

It may be mentioned that the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has constituted a group of transport ministers to examine the best practices in road safety and road transport sector and to suggest actionable point of implementation with the objective to reduce fatalities and road accidents.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will attend the meeting as chief guest on Thursday to be held at 10 am.

Assam Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary will also be present in the meeting.

The meeting will mainly focus on the following agenda: frame a National Road Safety Code with the objective to reduce fatalities and road accidents by 50 per cent by 2020; improving road accident victims’ assistance infrastructure; strategies for road safety advocacy programmes; harmonization of motor vehicles taxes across different states; strategies for improving the inter-state passenger and goods transport, harmonization of permit conditions and permit fees across the states; policy changes and implementation strategies for strengthening the State Road Transport Undertakings; facilitation of inter-state transfer of personal vehicles, NOC for driving licenses; strategies for incorporating technology for assessment for driving licenses; improving public transport and shared mobility services in the states to enhance customer experience and to enabling shift from personal transport to public transport and strategies for promoting environment friendly transport systems, the release added.
