The government is closely monitoring construction of a bridge by China at the Pangong Lake.ย 

This was stated by the ministry of external affairs (MEA) on Thursday.ย 

โ€œRegarding reports of a bridge being made by China on Pangong Lake, Government of India is monitoring this closely,โ€ the MEA said.ย 

It added that the site where the bridge is being constructed is under illegal Chinese occupation.ย 

โ€œThis bridge is being constructed in areas that have been under illegal occupation by China for around 60 years,โ€ the MEA said.ย 

It added: โ€œGovernment is taking steps to ensure our security interests are protected.โ€ย

Earlier, the Congress party had slammed the Centre after reports of China building a bridge across the Pangong Lake emerged.ย 

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha – Mallikarjunย Khargeย had said, โ€œChina is busy building a bridge on Pangong Lake to make it easier to deploy troops.โ€ย 

He added: โ€œMeanwhile, โ€˜Beijingโ€™ Janata Party leaders led by PM and home minister is busy in election rallies. The enemy is at our gates. PM Modi is taking a siesta.โ€ย 

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi also questioned the governmentโ€™s silence on the matter.ย 

โ€œPMโ€™s silence is deafening. Our land, our people, our borders deserve better,โ€ Rahul Gandhi had said.ย
