Ace Manipuri boxer and five-time world amateur boxing champion MC Mary Kom bagged gold in the women’s 45-48 kg category on Saturday morning on day 10 of the Commonwealth Games 2018 at Gold Coast in Australia.
Mary Kom defeated Northern Ireland’s Kristina O’Hara via unanimous decision stretching over three rounds in her first-ever CWG medal, bagging it in her debut appearance.
Her gold medal has taken India’s medals tally to 43.
She defeated her opponent from Northern Ireland 5-0 to claim the gold.
The 35-year-old won after the five judges laid the verdict – 30-27, 30-27, 29-28, 30-27, 20-27 – in her favour.
The 22-year-old opponent failed to counter Mary Kom’s immense experience throughout the three rounds as she dominated with her right hooks and in the second round she was at her ruthless best enjoying the bout in every way possible.
O’Hara did make a strong comeback in the final round of the battle, but it was not enough to impress the judges.
Mary Kom made a spectacular comeback to the ring almost five months ago in Vietnam to bag the gold medal in Asian Championship, after missing out on the Rio Olympics qualification.
And three months later, she claimed the gold in the maiden India Open boxing championship.
