Dibrugarh: Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, has become the first centre in Northeast India to administer Enzyme Replacement Therapy (ERT) using Valeglucerase Alpha to a 3-and-a-half-year-old child with a Lysosomal Storage Disorder (LSD).
The treatment was carried out by the Department of Paediatrics, led by Professor and Head Arpita Gogoi, along with Dorothy Gargo and a multidisciplinary team.
The treatment was provided under the Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Rare Diseases at AMCH.
The CoE was established under the National Policy for Rare Diseases (NPRD), 2021, of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
The achievement expands access to specialised treatment for patients with rare genetic and metabolic disorders in Assam and the Northeast.
The treatment is expected to provide timely specialised care to the child and marks progress towards more accessible and equitable healthcare for people affected by rare diseases.
