Imphal: Six candidates filed their nominations on Wednesday, the last day for filing nominations, for the upcoming 18th Lok Sabha elections from the Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency.

This brings the total number of contestants to seven for the seat.

The candidates who filed their nominations on Wednesday include Maheshwar Thounaojam (RPI-A), Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh (BJP), Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam (INC), Moirangthem Totomshana Nongshaba (RJSP), Haorungbam Sarat Singh (Independent), and Ngasepam Nilakanta Singh (Universal Family Party).

Rajkumar Somendro Singh (MPP) had already filed his nomination on Monday.

Scrutiny of the nomination papers will be held on March 28 at the Office of the Returning Officer for the constituency.

Manipur is set to conduct elections for its two parliamentary constituencies, the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat, and the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha seat, on April 19 and 29, respectively.

The guidelines stress the duty of the press to provide objective reporting on elections and candidates.

Newspapers are cautioned against engaging in unhealthy election campaigns, exaggerated reports, or biased coverage of candidates or incidents during the electoral process.

Furthermore, the guidelines emphasize the prohibition of publishing false or derogatory statements about the personal character or conduct of any candidate, as well as the importance of refraining from publishing unverified allegations against candidates or parties.

The press has also been warned against accepting any form of inducement, financial or otherwise, from candidates or parties, and is prohibited from indulging in canvassing for a particular candidate or party without providing the right to reply to opposing candidates or parties.
